Bagan Earthquake Update

On August 24th a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, killing 4 people and causing severe damage to the ancient temples of Bagan, 30km south of the hypocenter. According to recent visits at least 397 temples have been damaged and the Department of Archaeology has estimated it will take at least a year to restore the complex.

In response, the Cultural Ministry have imposed a temporary ban on climbing the famous pagodas of Bagan -a popular activity for tourists at sunrise and sunset- for the safety of both the people and the conservation of this now vulnerable site.

Buffalo Tours encourage all travellers to Myanmar to continue to visit Bagan and bring much needed income to the area, while remaining cautious and respecting the ban.
